Image Description.

Facebook post from Matt Norris.

Post reads like a conversation between 2 people:

Prison labor is a problem we need to address soon.

Convicts in prison should have to work like the rest of us.

You mean like slavery?

No, we’re giving them 3 meals and a bed, at our expense, while they just sit around and watch TV. They should have to work!

Right. Like slavery.

It’s not like slavery!

Can they leave?

No.

Can they refuse work?

No.

So how exactly isn’t this slavery?

We DO pay them!

Do we pay in accordance with labor laws?

No. We pay them between 33 cents and $1.41/hour with a maximum daily wage below $5, then take up to half of that as room&board fees and victim compensation.

Right. So like slavery.

BUT.

No.

Image then links to this url.

Below URL image reads “fun bonus fact: enough of our labor market currently relies on labor at these depressed rates, that it has a substantial downward pressure on both wages and job availability in low-skilled sectors. Immigrants aren’t taking your jobs. Slavery is.

End description.

I’d also like to add it’s not just private prisons. It’s also private detention centers where ICE keeps the immigrants.

The constitution even acknowledges that it’s still slavery

a hefty chunk of items with that ‘made in america’ sticker are in fact made by prison labor

at the very least anything that is a product of prison labor should be required to have a similar sticker to inform consumers they are taking part of this system, which is difficult to track because prison made manufactured goods include almost the entire uniform of a US soldier, road construction in most southern states, and agricultural goods sold in most stores

this…. looks familliar

Prison is just covert slavery and that’s why they wanna keep so many black people in there for the smallest offences.

This is insane

(Just to clarify, I’m not saying you’re wrong. I’m just giving you more information because you’re right, and I like your blog, and I want you to have sources in case you need them.)

It’s not even covert. It’s blatant and overt. It’s even called slavery in the constitution.

“Slavery is illegal except as punishment for a crime.”

Neither slavery nor involuntary servitude, except as a punishment for crime whereof the party shall have been duly convicted, shall exist within the United States, or any place subject to their jurisdiction.

People just don’t care because they think it’s all murderers and rapists, despite the fact that the number of violent criminals in jail is so small it might as well be negligible.

As of September 30, 2009 in federal prisons, 7.9% of sentenced prisoners were incarcerated for violent crimes,[39] while at year end 2008 of sentenced prisoners in state prisons, 52.4% had been jailed for violent crimes.[39] In 2002 (latest available data by type of offense), 21.6% of convicted inmates in jails were in prison for violent crimes. Among unconvicted inmates in jails in 2002, 34% had a violent offense as the most serious charge. 41% percent of convicted and unconvicted jail inmates in 2002 had a current or prior violent offense; 46% were nonviolent recidivists.[46]

It’s literally slavery, just dumbass racists and capitalists don’t care enough to figure out why we’re calling it that.

Actually, no, I got something to add and it’s this video by Knowing Better on Youtube:

Slavery is baked into the US American system so much more firmly than anyone ever really acknowledges.

There’s a very good and very hard-hitting documentary about it on Netflix

Also… even if someone has committed a violent crime, enslaving them is… ya know… still a fucked up thing to do? How is that even in question?

The whole discourse of “well they’re not even all violent offenders” has this weird undertone of ‘if they’re good people they shouldn’t have to be slaves’ that horrifies me. Even if 100% of them were violent, Slavery. Is. Wrong. All humans have rights.

i would highly recommend “American Prison” by Shane Bauer. it’s a sickening read, by a journalist who went undercover as a prison guard and the things he saw and was made to do and did voluntarily. but extremely good, and in many ways necessary. he has some articles that are basically abridged versions as well, if you don’t want to or can’t read the whole book

Seeing a lot of new people show up in my notes with like "proship dni" or whatever so RENT LOWERING GUNSHOT: IM AN ADULT WHO DOES NOT CARE IF PEOPLE HAVE PROBLEMATIC SHIPS, IM OLD AND BELIEVE TABOO FICTION IS SAFE AND HEALTHY, IM AN OLD MAN WHO THINKS IT'S FINE TO HAVE SHIPS THAT WOULD BE BAD IN REAL LIFE, I BELIEVE IN TABOO KINKS AS HEALING PLACES, I DO NOT DO SHIP DISCOURSE, I THINK IT'S OKAY TO WRITE ABOUT BAD THINGS HAPPENING TO GOOD PEOPLE WITHOUT CONDEMNING IT IN THE NARRATIVE, I THINK IT'S OKAY TO GET OFF TO MAKE BELIEVE BAD THINGS!!! THANKS

Another rent lowering gunshot: the older members of fandom are proship because they had to go through a time (that is, unfortunately, starting to become reality again) where everything was being censored. Entire fanfictions and fanarts were lost because websites removed them due to pressure from people very similar to current-day antis. This eventually led to the creation of AO3.

On a personal note, don't ever come to my blog with your anti garbage, especially if you've got 'pRoShIp DnI' in your bio and you're liking my anti censorship posts. You can go fuck yourself.

You want safe schools? Ban teachers from restricting bathroom access, using collective punishment, yelling at students, confisticating books, or banning items that are not actually harmful, grant any student with prescribed medicine the legally enforceable right to keep their medicine on their own person at all times during school hours(principals or school officials are not allowed to keep it locked up in their offices for "safe keeping"), abolish zero tolerance policies, make it easier to walk or cycle to school. All of that, or even any one of those things, would do so much more to actually protect students than phone bans.

Hey you. Yes, come here for a moment.

Let me tell you the most overlooked tip for fingering a girl.

Put the two fingers you would most likely use to finger a girl inside your mouth, now press the tips of your fingers against the inside of your cheek and drag them against it.

Did you go "But my nails look dirty and/or look they would hurt" before you even out them inside your mouth? Did it hurt when you dragged them against the inside of your cheek?

Clip them, file them down to get rid of any raged edges and clean them.

That's it. That's the tip.

the amount of maintenance being alive requires.. i got nothing against eating but 3x a day, every day? couple hours max until you feel hunger coming back? the same teethbrushing routine every morning and night forever? showering doesn't last more than a day? give me a break

speaking of unhinged stupid shit I've read recently

torn between astonishment at how stupid this is and a momentary breathless giddiness at the idea of somehow creating a psyop among conservative americans where we create a moral panic over sex for procreation.

sorry if I sound awkward and disoriented and sleep deprived and exhausted. it’s because I am

Hey so after watching six episodes of The Handmaid's Tale I have come to the conclusion that we are approximately two steps left from it happening.

Look, the show practically gives a step by step guide. Look at the American election results, and the way Canadian politics are leaning. We're getting there.

So, heres what you're going to do:

  1. Stash some cash: If you have extra funds, withdraw some. Stash it somewhere you would think to look that other people would not. Useful in all kinds of emergency situations.
  2. Update your paperwork: My passport is expired, I should update that. In my case, I'm a dual citizen so I could get out of dodge fast if I needed to. Keep it somewhere safe with the cash. We're talking passports, birth certificates social security numbers, etc.
  3. Keep physical copies: This is the digital age, but guard physical copies of what you do have closely. I have lots of cds and a cd player, pictures of me and my partner, books. Burning books is already a thing, I highly recommend purchasing books straight off of banned book lists.
  4. Read up on your herbs: Its not witchy voodoo shit if it works. Theres simple stuff, mint tea for nausea, raspberry leaf for cramps, mugwort for you know what. Be careful, I am not saying this is safe, but it may be necessary. Also everybody likes a good cup of tea.
  5. Bug out bag: For if you're really committed. This is a bag for survival situations, or if you have less than two minutes to leave your house. Read about it online. It should have everything you need (clothes, toiletries, food, medication) if you need to leave with what you can fit on your back.
  6. Write: Keep written record about anything you don't want to forget. Journal entries, song lyrics, recipes, whatever. It does not matter, notebooks are something you can throw under one arm and go.

Powerful men are not your friends, religious leaders are not your friends, that acquaintance with questionable world views is not your friend. Create a close network of people you trust with your life. I'm not joking.

I am aware I sound cuckoo bananas to some of you and thats fine. I sound cuckoo bananas to myself. Women are losing agency, queer people are losing their lives, disabled people are being forced further and further under the poverty line. I check all three of the boxes above, this is reality.

If you have to pick one or two, pick Stash some cash and Update your paperwork.

I was at my dentist today and they gave me my chart to update rather than try to deal with transcription and they had “Recreational drug user” marked. I’ve never used drugs recreationally???

Please stop quoting the Lorax at the people removing Bradford Pear trees.

...yeah, that's. hm. that's sure a level of lack of knowledge about flora on their part, huh.

"I speak for the trees, for the trees have no tongues,
"And I'm asking you, sir, at the top of my lungs:
"Stop planting invasives, they're tacky, they're smelly
"They're sticky and messy, they fill folks' noses with jelly!
"Stop planting the Bradfords, the gums, the juglone!
"Stop planting the Eucalyptus--that colourful fire-bomb!

"Please!" said the Lorax, eyes full of tears,
"I haven't seen Chestnut in many long years!
"I haven't seen Sycamore, the Sequoias are wee,
"And as for old Pando, that marvellous tree
"You've built a great fence right across his fine face!
"You've split him in pieces--as though it's your place!

"If the trees were there first, then--yes--leave them be!
"But those no-good invasives planted well after me!
"They were planted by settlers, who razed the land first!"
And he jumped up and down, "They're truly the worst!
"So chop down that Bradford, and chop it down good!
"And plant there a native that you always should

"Have left alone in the first place!" And so saying, he
Picked up my axe and he chopped down that tree!
And he gave me a seed, and said, "Treat him with care!
"Feed him clean water, give him fresh air!
"Grow a forest. Protect them from axes that hack.
Then the Lorax and all of his friends may come back."

(with apologies to Dr Seuss)

Incredible, no notes.

Get rid of invasive species

To be fair as far as the American Chestnut goes, that one's rare because of a blight hitting that affected them in particular. That one wasn't really intentional.

the weed dispensaries should ask if you would like to round up your purchase to donate to PBS. and if you say yes you get to scan a QR code that gives you 30-day free access to the full run of antiques roadshow. this is how drugs can win the war on drugs again.

IMPORTANT PSA! If you contribute to PBS or any local public broadcasting subsidiary at $5/mo ($60/yr) or above, you gain access to PBS Passport, which has a tremendous library of public broadcast programs available…including the full run of antiques roadshow

Society needs to get something through their heads: people who deal with chronic pain are not 'drug seekers" in the sense of just wanting something to get high. We are seeking them to get out of the agony we're in.
